I was pleasantly surprised to find a book of this genre written by and with the perspective of a female, but to my horror, time and again, the main character would make all the wrong decisions that you may find typical of Hollywoods depiction of women in these circumstances. Let me give you an example.

Cassidy is hiking through the woods when she comes across some people with a bonfire making noise, which she knows is a bad idea because the new regime is rounding up survivors, so she sneaks a peak anyways and then gets captured by said people who mistreat and abuse her along the lines of beatings, tied up with little food or water, and then when the regime shows up, and she escapes captivity, tries to help these people, even giving them their gun back, after firing warning shots at this evil regime that she knows is murdering the populace.

Through out the book, time and again Cassidy makes the worst decisions possible when it comes to a life and death decision. I get it that she is compassionate, but it just comes off as some liberal that thinks murdering thieving scum, in the act of murdering and stealing should not be shot, no matter what

If I were assigning labels I would call this book a YA/NA apocalyptic romance. The main character's personality and the prude romance give the book a young adult vibe, while the plot and characters ages target a more mature audience.

I loved the main storyline start to finish; however, I did have a few hang ups with the delivery. The book has a strong beginning but as the plot unfolds things start to feel forced. The storyline does a bit of weaving that, in my opinion, distracted the author from thoroughly cultivating the main ideas.

Overall, I did think State of Emergency was interesting and plan to read the next book in the series.

Specifics props and grievances...

The MC is a 19 year old introvert named Cassie. As the mother of a 19 year old socially awkward introvert I found Cassie completely genuine. She hides her social insecurity behind sarcasm and humor saying ridiculous things at inappropriate times just like my daughter, this delivers a bit of comic relief. I still think Cassie's personality hinders a true cross over to the new adult genre but it is authentic.

Cassie looks, acts, and even speaks like a teenager; the hero, Chris, is a 28 year old hottie ex-navy seal. These two are not a natural fit and the author doesn't do a great job of nurturing an emotional connection. A younger hero or an older (or at least more mature) leading lady would have gone a long way with me.

There's a few interchangeable run ins with cameo characters that seemed to be thrown in there because something needed to happen. I wish more time had been spent acquainting us with the main bad guy, Keller, and why he felt alienated enough to zero in on two insignificant people in the midst of a large scale hostile takeover. It's more interesting if the villain is an egomaniac with a personal agenda. As it is, the big bad is not adequately developed and the only notable villain is more of a tool than a 3D character.

A handful or so of secondary characters would have added variation, it's so easy to get bored, and subsequently annoyed, with the main characters if there are no wingmen. Aside from Keller, the only other secondary character to speak of is a preteen who is completely out of place in the story. I literally paused to wonder why she was written in, she was distracting and pointless.
I enjoy end of the world stories. I like reading about the collapse of society. So I had high hopes for this book. And it started out well.
An EMP wipes out the grid. Planes falling from the sky.
19 year-old Cassidy has a plan. She's going to meet her father at their cabin in the mountains. But fate takes a hand. She meets a cute ex-navy seal and they travel together.
Not so bad, right? But civilization begins to unravel extremely quickly, and a shadow army called Omega has taken over, easily quelling the civilian populace. And that was what I disliked about this book. I had a hard time believing some secret army could take over the entire USA so quickly, even if it was an inside job.
Results ok for escapism, but not very deep.
