Heyer must have had enormous fun writing this one: she flings her clues at the reader with incredible audacity. This book needs a second reading to appreciate her sense of humor -- much as mischievous as her character Neville Fletcher.

I really enjoy light-fiction writers who understand that what they are doing is entertainment, and enter into a tacit complicity with the reader, assuming intelligence on the part of same. To this end, Georgette Heyer creates some fairly realistic characters and scenes, and some rather fanciful ones. Her fanciful characters, however, are frequently acting that role deliberately. As to her realistic characters and scenes, there is in this book a scene between an estranged husband and wife that is so touching and rings so true that one wonders if Heyer had seen or participated in something of the sort.

If you enjoy Blunt Instrument -- even mildly -- put it away for a year (or a decade) and read it again, with full knowledge of who the killer is and how he committed the murders. See if you don't agree with me that Heyer must have been chuckling along from page one to the end. This is my (accidental) second reading of Blunt Instrument, and I laughed aloud continually at Heyer's skill and wicked sense of humor.

Georgette Heyer writes serious crime with a very humorous bent. The surprise was the identity of the murderer, of course! She paints her characters so colorfully that you get well acquainted with them as you read. I always look forward to the end of the book, but dread it at the same time! I don't like losing contact with my new "friends"!
If you like early 1930s movies in which the women are tall and thin and sit about languidly in floor length gowns while the men stroll about in dinner jackets, then this novel is for you. It has its cast of eccentric characters which are enjoyable and make for interesting and amusing reading. The plot involves the murder of a man in which everyone is a suspect and then it is shown that no one could be guilty. I may be a bit slow as it took me about 3/4 of the way through the book before I deduced who the murderer was. Can you do better?
I was able to guess the murderer from the start and I spent the rest of the book hoping I was wrong. Should I be proud of myself or disappointed because it was too obvious? I still enjoyed the book, but the mystery wasn't really a mystery to me. The characters of Neville Fletcher and Sally Drew were amusing but I actually enjoyed Sergeant Hemingway and his slight bitterness the most. I've read enough of Heyer's detective novels now to where I know there is a romance in each of them so it doesn't surprise me anymore. This one did feel a bit tacked on, but still cute nonetheless.
30 or 40 years back, I got on a British Victorian/Regency kick and read lots of Catherine Cookson and Georgette Heyer books. I don't remember whether I ran out or burned out, but I had not read another in all the intervening years. This book was like becoming reacquainted with an old friend. And it was a pleasure.
Blunt Instrument is in a slightly later time, being in the 1930s, but it was still peopled with flighty females and more serious males, engaged in frequent flip and flighty dialogue. I should add that there were a pair of murders to be solved by the very competent bobbies.
All in all, it was a quite light and pleasurable read.
One of the Best Georgette Heyer mysteries!! Delightfully witty & full of humor. If one enjoys Agatha Christie, Georgette Heyer's mysteries are a must; with more humor. Heyer was one of the "Very Best" at creating dialogue that makes one feel they are there listening to the conversation. She also had a grasp of the way things were in whatever time period she was writing about. I have returned to her books over & over as to dear, familiar friends.
A comical romantic farce of a mystery, I couldn't wait to get to the end. This tale has everything, grisly murder, suspects galore, straight men and comics and a dizzy run around plot. Neville is a smart mouthed hedonist who lives to stir the pot and, although the heir, has no tears to shed over his murdered uncle. Helen and John, married idiots who cannot tell each other the truth just keep everything muddled. Sally, a monocled young lady tries to keep the habitually stupid from running their mouths while PC Glass pronounces Biblical doom everywhere he goes, annoying his superiors along with everyone else. The conversations are fast paced and snappy. While one may guess we'll who done the deed, still an enjoyable time is spent through to the final page!
As a lifelong fan of Georgette Heyer, I am sorry to report that this is the worst book she ever wrote -- even worse than cold-hearted Simon.. I guessed who the murderer had to have been almost immediately, certainly no later than the third chapter. The rest of the book was repetitive in the extreme, featuring the most annoying character Heyer ever came up with, plus page after page of people explaining to each other how they did it (only they couldn't possibly have done it), while I waited for actual clues to emerge, hoping in vain to be proven wrong. The police investigating the crime were amazingly obtuse -- if I had read one more time that the murder HAD to have been committed between 1001 and 1002 p.m., I would have screamed. I can't even recommend this novel to rabid fans desperate for a Heyer "fix." I gave the book two stars only because -- well, HEYER.
