I have read this book many times and it never fails to amuse me. It is a story about the inequality of women, justified by keeping them in the dark about business practices and by making sure each generation is taught that they should leave the problems of handling of money in the hands of the men of the family. It gives insight into the callousness of men at the time. The men had no compassion for the poverty of the family old maids and widows and suffered no compunctions while cheating them out of food money or the money to repair they pitiful little cottages. After all, it wasn't their fault the women were so easily cheated, their grandfather taught them women didn't need to be educated about these things. They "only" perpetuated the practice and were grateful and richer for it. There is also a "little" love story and a little "miracle" to make it interesting and delightful. Loved the characters.

When I started reading The Ladies of Missalonghi, during the first portion of the book, I often wondered why I was wasting time with this story. By the time Missy made her first decision to speak out independently, however, I began to take an interest in her story and the writer's craft as the book progressed. My interest continued to grow as events occurred and soon I found the book hard to put down without going just a few more pages to see if my suspicions were correect about the direction the story was heading. I was pretty proud of myself for correctly guessing the next series of events until I reached the very last page. I was totally flabbergasted at the final turn which not only made final sense out of certain seemingly unconnected parts of the story but actually changed the genre of the book itself in the last few paragraphs of this remarkable tale. I read a library version of this delightful novel and liked it so much that I bought it for my daughter. She loved not only the book but the illustrations in this particular edition.
Not a great book but it doesn’t deserve the vitriol the one-star reviewers have heaped on it. I have read the Blue Castle which I also consider good, not great. McCullough’s book seemed more like a reimagining than plagiarism. For example, Missy’s mother and aunt were much more sympathetic characters than Valancy’s. And I loved the end of Ladies. I say read them both. I find them both enjoyable.
This short novel by Colleen McCullough was published as an e-book few days ago but I discovered that was first published in 1987. Nevertheless it was a delightful way to say a short goodbye to Colleen, who passed away on 29 January 2015, for the enjoyment that I got from many of her books.

Just before WWI the town of Byron in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney was dominated by the male line of the Hurlingford family and had been so for many generations. Wealth only passed to the male line and with most females in the family living on their own existing in dreary poverty. Missalonghi (Missy) Wright is single, over thirty and lives with her widowed mother and crippled aunt. Her life is boring and meaningless, the only joy being her love of books, especially romantic novels, and her dream of being able to afford to dress in bright colours instead of practical everyday brown.

One day a stranger, John Smith, comes to town and disturbs the Hurlingford males because he has bought a local valley that they didn't know was available (they would have owned it themselves if they had known). John Smith brings hope and change into Missy's life that has an unexpected and huge impact on the Hurlingford's of Byron.

This is a charming, amusing and short novel with an ending spiced with divine intervention that seemed appropriate for the last novel I read from such a superb author. Colleen McCullough was a feisty, independent-minded, internationally acclaimed author of many marvellous books (including the classic Thornbirds saga and her brilliantly researched Masters of Rome series). She will be sadly missed.

This e-book contains promotional first chapters of Colleen's last novel, Bittersweet A Novel about the four Latimer sisters which I read and enjoyed 16 months ago. In my review I said that the ending left scope for visiting the lives of the sisters later on in their lives. Sadly that is not to be.
